When to Choose Urgent Care vs. the ER

Clinician triaging an urgent concern

As a former ER doctor, I can tell you: roughly half of ER visits don't need an emergency room. They need a skilled clinician quickly — which is exactly what video urgent care provides. Here's how to choose wisely in the moment.

Start with video urgent care when…

You have a UTI, sinus infection, pink eye, mild allergic reaction, small cut, insect bite, sprain you can bear weight on, or flu-like symptoms without breathing trouble. We diagnose, prescribe, and arrange testing in one visit — median wait under ten minutes.

Go to in-person urgent care when…

You likely need hands-on procedures: stitches, X-rays for a possible fracture, ear cleaning, or IV fluids. If you're unsure, start with a video visit — we'll direct you to the right clinic with your notes already sent ahead.

Go to the ER (or call 911) when…

Chest pain or pressure, difficulty breathing, signs of stroke (face droop, arm weakness, speech trouble), heavy bleeding, head injury with confusion, severe abdominal pain, or broken bones with deformity. Minutes matter — don't book online.

The cost difference is enormous

A video urgent visit costs a fraction of the average ER bill, and most insurance plans cover it like any office visit. Choosing right saves you money and keeps ERs clear for true emergencies.

Still uncertain? That's literally what triage is for. Start a Doorlight urgent visit and a clinician will assess severity within minutes — if you need the ER, we'll say so immediately and help coordinate.

Call 911 now for: chest pain, trouble breathing, stroke signs, heavy bleeding, or severe injury.
